The Trump administration views the tariff measures as a "panacea" to promote American re-industrialization, balance trade deficits, and improve fiscal conditions. However, most economists warn that these measures may have serious negative impacts on the U.S. economy.
Although Trump's tariff list is long, it has also caused some jokes, such as "Heard Island and McDonald Islands," which are uninhabited Antarctic islands and not independent countries. They are overseas territories of Australia. The only permanent residents are penguins.
World Trade Organization (WTO) Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala made rare comments on the global trade situation on Thursday (April 3), warning that the latest high tariffs announced by the U.S. government could cause a decline in global merchandise trade volume by about 1% this year.
