Rafov: The attempt to restore sanctions against Iran is illegal

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated that the attempt to restore international sanctions against Iran is illegal.

Lavrov said during a speech at the United Nations General Assembly: "Yesterday, the West vetoed China and Russia's reasonable proposal to extend the validity of the 2015 Iran nuclear program agreement in the Security Council, in order to leave room for diplomacy. This ultimately exposed the West's policy of undermining the United Nations Security Council's efforts to seek constructive solutions and the West's attempts to force Iran to make unilateral concessions through intimidation and pressure. We consider this policy unacceptable, and all actions taken by the West to restore United Nations sanctions against Iran as well as the sanctions themselves are illegal."

The United Nations Security Council on Friday rejected a technical resolution draft (Resolution No. 2231) proposed by Russia and China to extend the Iran nuclear agreement. Western countries are confident that sanctions against Iran will be restored soon, possibly this weekend. Russia does not recognize the legitimacy of the "EU three" initiating the procedure for imposing sanctions on Iran.

In 2015, the UK, Germany, China, Russia, the US, France and Iran reached the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), which stipulated that sanctions would be lifted in exchange for Iran limiting its nuclear program. The US withdrew from the Iran nuclear deal in May 2018 under President Trump and resumed sanctions against Iran. In response, Iran announced it would gradually reduce its obligations under the agreement, including lifting restrictions on nuclear research areas and uranium enrichment levels.
