For many years, Arcadia in Southern California has been famous for its peacocks roaming freely on the streets, earning it the nickname "Peacock City." Coincidentally, residents of Rosemead have recently spotted peacocks in multiple communities. Polly Low, a city council member of Rosemead, stated that the city had never seen peacocks before, and the origin of this group of peacocks remains a mystery.
Polly Low said that over the past week, many citizens had seen peacocks in their neighborhoods, and she herself had seen one near Interstate 60. Rosemead had never seen peacocks before, and she was unsure of their origin.
Arcadia is not adjacent to Rosemead; they are about six miles apart with Temple City separating them. However, Temple City's vice mayor, Winston Wen, stated that no peacocks had been seen in his city.
The city of Rosemead released a message on the 24th, stating that citizens had repeatedly seen peacocks in the downtown area. "Although these birds are beautiful and suitable for viewing, do not feed or approach them, and do not attempt to interact with them," the city stated. The city explained that because peacocks have specific dietary needs, feeding them casually by humans may affect their health. Additionally, frequent feeding could attract more peacocks to settle in residential areas, causing street congestion, noise, and chaos.
Peacocks, although beautiful, are a sweet burden for cities and communities. The city of Rosemead stated that peacocks could cause property damage to citizens, including: 1) vehicle damage: peacocks are territorial animals, and when they see their reflection in car rearview mirrors or the image reflected on shiny car bodies, they will peck at the cars, causing scratches on the bodywork; 2) roof and gutter damage: the sharp claws and heavier bodies of peacocks can damage roofs; 3) garden damage: peacocks will peck flower beds, vegetable gardens, and other vegetation; 4) droppings: peacock droppings can contaminate driveways, cars, and rooftops, dirtying living environments and posing hygiene risks; 5) noise: the calls of peacocks, especially in the morning, can disturb and seriously affect residents' rest.
In addition, the city of Rosemead recommends that citizens keep a safe distance while watching peacocks, secure garbage cans, and avoid leaving food outdoors. Inform children and neighbors not to feed them. If attacked by a peacock, call the Rosemead Animal Control Bureau at 626-5692292.
