According to The Wall Street Journal: The United States has proposed unfreezing part of Iran's frozen assets in exchange for control over the Strait of Hormuz.

"The U.S., in coordination with Oman, is trying every possible means to dissuade Iran from its hardline stance—particularly Iran's demand that vessels pay tolls to pass through the strait."

In indirect negotiations, the main leverage the U.S. holds is the promise to unfreeze a portion of Iran's $100 billion in overseas assets.

However, Tehran has so far refused this bait.

The report states that Iran has rejected the U.S. proposal regarding the Strait of Hormuz, deeming the conditions offered by Washington insufficient. After talks in Doha, Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Karib-Abadi emphasized: "Control over this waterway belongs to Iran—not the United States."
