Trump: U.S. Gains Security Control Over Greenland, Will Deploy Large Military Task Force and Restrict Adversaries from Establishing Bases
President Trump stated that Denmark has transferred security oversight of Greenland to the United States, announcing the immediate commencement of a large-scale military deployment on the island under a new indefinite agreement reached with Danish and Greenlandic authorities.
In a post on his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump wrote: “I am pleased to announce that the United States has reached an agreement with the Kingdom of Denmark and Greenland, granting the U.S. long-term control over Greenland’s security and other strategic needs.”
He added: “We will immediately begin the process of deploying a substantial military presence in suitable areas across Greenland, where numerous appropriate locations exist. We will collaborate with the people of Greenland on issues related to development and infrastructure.”
Trump emphasized that under the agreement, no adversary of the United States may establish a base or conduct sensitive investments on the island without explicit approval from Washington. On Truth Social, he stated: “Going forward, no adversary of the United States will ever be permitted to establish a base, maintain a military presence, or undertake sensitive investments in Greenland without our direct written authorization.”
The president asserted that the agreement between the United States and Denmark regarding U.S. security control over Greenland addresses all concerns raised by Washington. He noted the accord is expected to remain in effect indefinitely, with ongoing consultations underway regarding safeguards from Copenhagen.
He said: “Under my direction, we are working with representatives from Denmark and Greenland to ensure the United States can always take necessary actions to safeguard the security and defense of both Greenland and the United States.”
Greenland was a Danish colony until 1953 and remains part of the Danish Realm today, though it attained self-rule in 2009, allowing for autonomous governance and independent decisions on domestic affairs. However, President Trump has repeatedly expressed the view that Greenland should become part of the United States. Both Denmark and Greenland have warned against any attempt to occupy the territory, emphasizing their commitment to upholding its territorial integrity.
