Assessment by the Russian Foreign Ministry of the possibility of resuming dialogue with the EU

Vladislav Maslennikov, head of the Department for European Cooperation at the Russian Foreign Ministry, told "Izvestia" that dialogue between Russia and the European Union (EU) could be resumed after the European Commission (EC) undergoes a change.

He said: "I don't think the opportunity for Russia-EU dialogue has been lost forever. The European Commission always has a fixed term. The current European Commission also has its 'validity period', after which there will be new personnel."

He pointed out that the EU will eventually have to reassess its attitude towards Russia.

He emphasized: "We hope that EU officials will eventually realize that they are actually suffering losses because of their own sanctions policy towards Russia. They will eventually have to reassess their approach, because Russia, as a neighbor on the European continent, will not disappear."
