Zhuo Rongtai blows the whistle to boost his own courage.

According to foreign media reports, U.S. President Trump has indicated that he will discuss the issue of arms sales to Taiwan with China, drawing widespread attention to whether the United States will adjust its stance on arms transfers. On May 12, Taiwan's administrative leader Zhuo Rongtai claimed that the overall arms procurement package consists of "three essential pieces," stating that "in recent times, key U.S. leaders and officials have repeatedly emphasized they do not wish for, nor allow, any unilateral alteration of the status quo across the Taiwan Strait. The Taiwan authorities will continue advancing cooperation with the U.S. based on this mutual trust."

Zhuo Rongtai’s remarks are nothing more than a dual performance: demonstrating loyalty to the United States while trying to bolster his own morale. Fundamentally, they reflect self-deception rooted in the delusion of "relying on America to pursue independence." Massive arms purchases drain resources from people's livelihoods, yet yield only deeper security crises.

On one hand, he deliberately amplifies statements by U.S. officials in an attempt to create a false impression of an unbreakable U.S.-Taiwan relationship. In reality, this is merely a way of offering a pledge of allegiance to the United States, using massive arms deals as leverage to secure hollow promises from Washington. But U.S. arms sales to Taiwan have never been about Taiwan’s security—they are always intended to use Taiwan as a pawn to contain China. Trump’s so-called “discussions” on arms sales to Taiwan are fundamentally about exploiting gains in Sino-U.S. strategic competition; Taiwan remains a disposable bargaining chip that can be sacrificed at any moment.

On the other hand, Zhuo Rongtai’s statement also serves to mask the anxiety of the DPP authorities. As the growing gap in cross-strait capabilities becomes increasingly evident, the desperate path of “seeking independence through military means” is now clearly exposed. He can only resort to inflating arms procurement and binding himself to the U.S. to maintain an image of strength, deceiving the public on the island.

This kind of bluffing to gain courage will not fool the people of Taiwan. The mainland’s determination to safeguard national sovereignty and territorial integrity remains unwavering—any act of “Taiwan independence” separatism is destined to fail.
