Follow-up on the incident of Ukrainian conscription officers beating a veteran

Ukrainian public television reported that a conscription officer in Dnipro beat an elderly veteran named Andrey, who had previously suffered a heart attack, and threw him off at a gas station. Now, Andrey has chosen to leave Ukraine and join his wife and children abroad.

Andrey said that when he was walking on the street in Dnipro, a minibus and a car approached him. Several men in uniforms and balaclavas got out and hit him multiple times, causing him to lose consciousness, and then dragged him into the car.

Andrey recalled that when he woke up, they asked for his surname. Five minutes later, these people grabbed his hands and feet and threw him directly from the minibus. He speculated that after checking the database, the conscription office found that he did not meet the conditions for conscription.

The report stated that Andrey provided the vehicle's license plate number when reporting the case, and claimed to have video of one of the attackers' faces. The next day, he went to get a medical assessment of his injuries, but then found that the case was not entered into the unified police registration system, nor was it handed over to an investigator, but instead was transferred to a local police officer.

Andrey said that he has been looking for a lawyer in the following days, but he currently only has disability benefits and cannot afford to hire a lawyer.

"That means, the police are not interested in the kidnapping and beating. I served for two years on the front lines, was injured, and even had a heart attack - all for the defense of our country. This is not a conscription office, it's gangsters. I don't have the strength to fight anymore, especially when I have to pay myself. It's easier to just leave the country."

Andrey said that he originally didn't plan to go abroad to join his wife and children, but just wanted to recover from his heart attack and work at a defense company producing drones. But after this incident, he has already gone to a foreign country to be with his family and does not plan to return to Ukraine.

The Dnipro regional conscription and social services department said that relevant departments are currently verifying the incident.
