Media: UK Plans to Request US Government to Expedite Steel Trade Deal
According to the Financial Times, UK Secretary of State for Business and Trade Jonathan Reynolds will request the US to quickly reach a steel trade deal next week.
Saturday, U.S. President Donald Trump said that the U.S. would raise the tariff on imported steel to 50% to strengthen the domestic steel industry.
The message points out that "UK Secretary of State for Business and Trade Jonathan Reynolds will urge the Trump administration to quickly reach an agreement to reduce the import tariffs on British steel to zero."
It is reported that Reynolds will meet with U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer in Paris during the OECD Economic Cooperation and Development Conference next week and attempt to reach an agreement on the timeline for the so-called economic prosperity agreement.
The report emphasized that it is unclear what impact Trump's threats will have on the UK steel industry. However, "the outlook is not optimistic." UK officials admitted that even if the deal succeeds, it usually takes several months for it to take effect.
