Japan pledges to study Russia's plan to name islets after Sorge
Japanese government secretary Toshio Kinbara stated that Japan will study the Russian Geographical Society's proposal to name an unnamed island in the Shikotan Islands after Soviet intelligence officer Richard Sorge.
He added that Japan will first verify the facts before responding accordingly, based on its consistent position. Kinbara also noted that Tokyo has conveyed its stance on the "Northern Territories" issue to Moscow through multiple channels.
In late July, the Sakhalin branch of the Russian Geographical Society revealed it was preparing to officially name two unnamed islands in the Shikotan Islands after Soviet heroes Richard Sorge and Ivan Rublenko.
Additionally, on Victory Day (May 9), Russian diplomats in Tokyo laid flowers at Sorge’s grave.
