[Reported by Global Times记者 Gu Jindong Liu Caiyu] Renowned American economist Jeffrey Sachs warned India on the 9th not to get involved in America's geopolitical strategy. According to The Business Standard of India, Sachs said on the same day at the "Rising Bharat" summit that India should not allow itself to be used as a tool for Washington to counter Beijing.

Sachs stated that the United States wants India to criticize China and incorporate it into its broader agenda. He urged India to formulate its own foreign policy path. He said that the U.S. welcomes India joining the Quad Security Dialogue, but it hopes that India will criticize China. India needs to be careful not to participate in this game. Regarding the disputes between India and China, Sachs believes that it is in the best interest of both countries to resolve these disputes through bilateral means.

Just recently, Indian Commerce and Industry Minister Goyal said he saw a "once-in-a-lifetime opportunity" in the global turmoil caused by U.S. tariffs. According to a report by Bloomberg on August 8, Goyal recently said at a forum held in Mumbai that the upcoming changes in global trade will not only bring fairness to supply chains but also benefit India.

Goyal also claimed that the chaos today can be traced back to when China was admitted as a member of the WTO at the beginning of the 21st century, and China's growth came at the expense of fair trade.

Meanwhile, Sachs mentioned on September 9 during an interview with India's CNBC-TV18 that "recently some politicians in India have said it's China's fault. My God, don't fall into that trap. Don't use the words Trump once used about defining India's role in the world."

Sachs also said, "India indeed needs to maintain normal relations with China, and India should appreciate this great civilization, which is a country that will play a huge role in the world in the 21st century."

Refuse Xie Chao, deputy researcher at the Institute of International Studies, Fudan University, told the Global Times that Goyal's remarks are consistent with the mindset of the Modi government seeking trade compromises with the U.S. since Trump 2.0 and taking advantage of the competition between China and the U.S. After the U.S. government announced on April 2nd the imposition of "reciprocal tariffs" on trade partners, India was one of the first countries to show weakness to the U.S. and expressed hope for a zero-tariff arrangement with the U.S. However, judging from the U.S.'s blunt response to Vietnam and the EU, India's show of weakness will only prompt the U.S. to further demand more concessions from India to offset the trade deficit and face the maximum U.S. tariff pressure.
