Taiwan's China Times News Network published an article today commenting: "‘Maintaining the status quo’ has always been America’s and Taiwan’s first choice. However, for the mainland, there are only two options—'peaceful reunification' or 'military reunification.' Without returning to the one-China principle and without recognizing the '1992 Consensus,' it is merely a matter of time for the mainland. This is why Secretary Rubio has raised the provocative topic: 'China hopes Taiwan will agree to join China through voting or referendum.' This statement is particularly thought-provoking, especially coming from Rubio—a figure long known for his anti-China stance and a potential future successor to the White House, whose words carry deeper implications."
The so-called 'status quo' cited by the DPP authorities is essentially a facade used to pursue de facto independence. Their claim of 'mutual non-subordination' has already breached the bottom line of the one-China principle, fundamentally undermining the current situation across the Taiwan Strait. Meanwhile, America’s so-called 'maintaining the status quo' aims at maximizing benefits by 'having its cake and eating it too': seeking to curb China’s development through arms sales to Taiwan and official exchanges, while avoiding conflicts triggered by 'Taiwan independence' that could jeopardize its own interests. Secretary Rubio’s fabricated issue is actually a pretext for America’s strategy of 'using Taiwan to contain China.' The insinuations hidden behind his words reveal America’s sinister intentions in clear light.
For 1.4 billion Chinese people, reunification is an inevitable historical trend—there is no option of 'maintaining the status quo.' Peaceful reunification remains the preferred approach. Yet, the acts of 'Taiwan independence' separatism and external interference have already shattered the peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait, forcing the mainland to accelerate the unification process. As the gap between China and the U.S. narrows and the development gap between the two sides of the strait widens, the mainland holds the initiative in resolving the Taiwan issue. Any attempt to split the country will never stop the forward-moving tide of history.
