Reference News website reported on May 26. The Wall Street Journal website published an article on May 22 titled "What Kind of 'Strategic Stronghold' Has China Built?" written by Ian Stone. The following are excerpts from the article: In May 2018, when Chinese leaders convened a meeting with top scientists in Beijing, storm clouds were gathering. At that time, the U.S. began tightening technology exports to China, and more restrictions were being planned. Chinese leaders stated that key core technologies cannot be begged for, bought, or demanded. Only by mastering key core technologies in their own hands can they fundamentally ensure national economic security, defense security, and other securities. Since then, China has made rapid progress in many strategic fields, catching up with the U.S. in some aspects. Chinese electric vehicle companies have ranked among the world's best, artificial intelligence (AI) startups can rival OpenAI and Google, breakthroughs are constantly being achieved in biopharmaceutical research, and advanced robotic equipment is everywhere in factories. On the seas, Chinese-made cargo ships dominate the global shipping market. These achievements and many others are consolidating China and its economic strength. China had already begun to promote technological independence before Trump first entered the White House. In 2015, a plan called "Made in China 2025" identified a series of national priority development areas, including robotics technology, aerospace, and new energy vehicles. China's technological development is enhancing its manufacturing power. The number of industrial robots purchased by Chinese companies is equivalent to the total of the rest of the world, enabling some factory owners to try highly automated factories that can run even without lighting. Over three-quarters of the robots installed in China in the past decade came from foreign manufacturers such as Japan or Germany. However, according to data from the International Federation of Robotics, by 2023, Chinese robot manufacturers accounted for nearly half of the domestic market share. In the more complex and sophisticated humanoid robot field, Chinese companies like UBTECH are competing with American companies. This self-reliance extends to highly sensitive fields such as nuclear power. At the Sanmen Nuclear Power Plant in Taizhou, Zhejiang Province, two nuclear reactors under construction since 2009 came from Westinghouse Electric headquartered in Pennsylvania; now, the new two reactors will fully adopt Chinese technology. China's independently developed Hualong One units enable the country to better control costs and timelines while eliminating the risk of the U.S. refusing to sell more nuclear reactors to China in the future. In the process of promoting self-sufficiency, China currently holds about two-thirds of the world's corn reserves and has established large oil and metal reserves. In the financial sector, the scope of cross-border use of the renminbi continues to expand, and the construction of cross-border settlement systems is steadily progressing. China views self-sufficiency as an "insurance" mechanism, an important guarantee against external challenges. This policy has achieved significant results. Data from Clarkson Research, a ship information provider, shows that in 2024, the tonnage of ships delivered by Chinese shipyards will account for 53% of the global total, compared to only 8% in 2002. In recent years, the U.S. has tried to restrict China's access to the most advanced chips through export controls, which instead has spurred accelerated development of domestic chip production in China. Morgan Stanley estimates that with continuous breakthroughs in China's chip manufacturing technology, the self-sufficiency rate of domestically produced graphics processing units (GPUs) will rise from 11% in 2021 to 82% by 2027.
