According to multiple media outlets on September 3, a South Korean man in his thirties was sentenced to 10 months in prison by the Seoul Western District Court on August 21 for attacking Chinese tourists twice this year, charged with assault and armed assault.

The report states that the case information shows the first attack occurred on April 1, when the man was dissatisfied with two Chinese women in their twenties speaking loudly in Chinese on a bus. After getting off at the same bus stop, he followed them about 70 meters and insulted the victims in Chinese and kicked the woman's waist.

The second incident occurred on April 6 at a restaurant in Mapo District, Seoul. The South Korean man attacked two tourists from Taiwan, China, because he heard them speaking Chinese. The victims were a man in his thirties and a woman in her twenties. When the two were leaving the restaurant, the South Korean man hit the man's head with a prepared sake bottle. A restaurant employee tried to stop the attacker, pushing him to the ground, but was bitten on the thigh and knee by the man.

The court's ruling stated: "The defendant appears to have committed a hate crime against Chinese citizens out of long-standing hostility. The victims were attacked without any reason, which is a factor that aggravates the punishment." However, the ruling also mentioned that the defendant "deeply regretted his actions and turned himself in after the case was reported by the media," and these circumstances were considered by the judge when sentencing.
