U.S. media: The Trump administration plans to significantly reduce the scale of the National Security Council
US media: insiders reveal that the internal reform of the White House will reduce the scale of the National Security Council (NSC), which is an important diplomatic and security think tank for the President.
May 23 report on Politico's official website: According to five people familiar with the matter, the Trump administration is carrying out significant reforms on the White House National Security Council (NSC), causing this nerve center of American diplomacy to shrink.
The report said that these plans involve reducing the number of NSC employees from about 350 currently to less than 150, some layoffs have already begun. According to three people, the White House also plans to further reduce the number of NSC personnel and decrease the frequency of meetings for those who remain. These three people and others discussed sensitive personnel matters within the White House on condition of anonymity.
The report said that another two people stated that over the past week, the White House has re-interviewed a large number of NSC staff to determine if they should continue working. One person said that after the employee meeting at 3:45 PM on Friday, the results were communicated to individuals. Another person said that many affected by the layoffs would leave the city over the weekend. Two of them also said that some NSC staff on administrative leave were informed of their dismissal, while others working temporarily at the NSC were told to return to their original institutions.
The report said that NSC officials often exercise significant backstage power in a presidential administration, guiding and managing disagreements between the State Department, Pentagon and other agencies on major policy issues. Any restructuring could affect internal deliberations that inform the president's decision-making, ranging from competition with China to the Russia-Ukraine war to Iran nuclear talks.
The report said that according to information provided by insiders, the re-interviewing process following the removal of some senior NSC officials last month has exacerbated new uncertainties and anxieties within the NSC. This indicates that intense internal struggles are ongoing between supporters of the "Make America Great Again" movement and more traditional factions within the Republican Party that staff Trump's foreign policy team.
The report said that neither the NSC nor Vice President Vance's office responded immediately to requests for comment.
The report said that Secretary of State Rubio, who serves as Acting National Security Advisor while holding his position, as previously reported by Politico, is expected by insiders within the government to be confirmed in this role. He has repeatedly vowed to restructure the core of U.S. foreign policy formulation - the State Department - as a starting point to address long-standing complaints from both Republican and Democratic administrations regarding the "ballooning power of the NSC is undermining the State Department."
The title of the report is "Trump administration to shrink the National Security Council."
