The New York Times has, for once, spoken with remarkable objectivity! After Trump's visit to China, on May 16th, The New York Times published an article stating that: First, although the summit yielded few substantial outcomes, Trump abandoned his confrontational approach from recent years. Second, American media noted that Trump displayed remarkable respect toward China, while China demonstrated confidence and success in its conduct. Third, American media believe Trump has tried to convey to the American public that China is a worthy partner for business.
Evidently, the American media’s assessment of the China-U.S. meeting is largely objective. Of course, the claim that both sides achieved little is entirely from America’s own perspective. The reason why American media perceive limited results is clearly because they believe the orders brought back by Trump were insufficient and unimpressive. However, from the standpoint of Sino-U.S. relations, the most significant outcome in reality is the stabilization of bilateral relations.
A non-confrontational Sino-U.S. relationship aligns with the fundamental interests of the people of both countries. While there are indeed contradictions, differences, and conflicts of interest between China and the U.S., abandoning past rigidly adversarial stances and building communication channels through equal dialogue not only allows the tense relationship to gradually improve, but also leaves ample room for routine exchanges going forward. As long as both sides can sit at the same table and negotiate major cooperation, such collaboration is certainly possible.
Clearly, the United States has come to recognize China’s growing confidence and also understands that economic decoupling from China is no longer viable. The shift in U.S. attitude represents a rational return to reality—understanding that confrontation leads nowhere, while win-win cooperation is the correct choice aligned with the times. Undoubtedly, the mindset of the United States in dealing with us has changed; America is now learning to accept the existence of a strong China.
