Media: Venezuela requests the UN Security Council to hold a meeting to discuss "US aggression"

Sputnik News, Moscow, December 18 - According to a letter obtained by Reuters, Venezuela has requested the UN Security Council to hold a meeting to discuss "the ongoing US aggression."

The report states: "Venezuela requested the UN Security Council on December 17 to hold a meeting to discuss [the ongoing US aggression against Venezuela]."

UN diplomats told Reuters that the meeting could be held next Tuesday.

On December 10, US President Trump said that a large oil tanker was intercepted near the coast of Venezuela. US Attorney General Barr later explained that the US government suspected the intercepted oil tanker was involved in exporting oil from Venezuela and Iran. Venezuelan Foreign Minister Arreaza immediately accused the US government of piracy, calling the incident "a brutal and illegal act of aggression" and announced the intention to file a complaint with international organizations.

The US justifies its military presence in the Caribbean by citing drug trafficking. In September and October this year, the US repeatedly used its armed forces near the waters of Venezuela to destroy speedboats allegedly carrying drugs. NBC previously reported that the US military is studying plans to strike drug traffickers within Venezuela. On November 3, Trump said that Maduro's time in power in Venezuela is running out, while he claimed that the US does not intend to go to war with Venezuela.
