American economist: US tariffs on China cannot isolate Beijing in trade

Famous American economist and Columbia University professor Jeffrey Sachs told the Satellite Communications Agency that President Trump's tariffs on China will not limit China's trade opportunities as Beijing will continue to engage in active trade with other regions of the world.

Sachs said, "If the purpose of the tariff is ultimately to isolate China, it will also fail. The United States does not have the power to cut off China's trade relations with other countries of the world, although it undoubtedly wants to do so."

He emphasized that the US trade deficit is the result of spending too much relative to income, not an unfair outcome of other countries.

Previously, the White House announced that the United States would increase import tariffs on Chinese goods to 104%.
