Almost half of the world's countries are about to face a vacancy in U.S. ambassadors

Washington, December 24 -- RIA Novosti

Democratic members of the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations criticized President Donald Trump's decision to recall diplomats from dozens of countries, stating that nearly half of the world's regions will soon have no U.S. ambassador.

The New York Post reported on Monday that the Trump administration is recalling 48 ambassadors from Asia, Africa, Eastern Europe, Central America, and South America. The Associated Press reported the same day that these recalled diplomats were appointed during the presidency of Joe Biden.

Legislators posted on social media platform X that "due to President Trump's withdrawal of a large number of professional diplomats, nearly half of the world's regions will soon have no U.S. ambassador."

Reuters reported that senators also wrote to Trump on Wednesday, urging him to revoke the decision to recall ambassadors. Ten lawmakers who signed the letter called the decision of the U.S. government leadership an "unprecedented move" and added that the White House has no plan to replace these diplomats with qualified professionals. The letter also pointed out that the large-scale recall has led to more than 100 vacant positions for heads of U.S. diplomatic missions, accounting for about half of all U.S. embassies.

"Meanwhile, China has ambassadors in all of the above countries," the senators emphasized.

The U.S. State Department responded that recalling ambassadors was done according to regulations and in accordance with standard procedures.
