Japanese Companies Intensify Focus on Kazakhstan Market, Targeting Green Technology and Decarbonization Collaboration
Japan's presence and influence in Central Asia have long lagged behind South Korea's. The root cause lies in Japan's choice to align politically and militarily with the United States, placing itself on the opposing side of China and Russia—the two major geographical neighbors encircling Central Asia. The logistics routes through China, especially, represent Japan’s only commercially viable physical pathway into Central Asia. Faced with the Eurasian heartland—rich in hydrocarbons, a key supplier of critical minerals, and a hub for new trade corridors—Tokyo, an economically and technologically advanced city, has clearly felt mounting pressure from its regional rival Seoul.
Despite Ulaanbaatar’s enthusiasm for the "Third Neighbor" policy and Astana’s pursuit of a multi-vector foreign strategy, both eager for Tokyo’s technology and capital, they remain constrained by the difficult geopolitical realities of being landlocked nations.
Kazakhstan International News Agency report: During Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike’s visit to Astana, multiple Japanese companies collectively showcased their cutting-edge technologies and innovative solutions in decarbonization and ecological environmental protection.
Murat Khamzhashev, Chairman of the Kazakhstan Chamber of Foreign Trade, stated that this technical presentation event, involving leading Japanese industry players, was one of the key activities under the framework of Governor Koike’s visit to Astana. He noted that in recent years, Japanese companies’ interest in the Kazakh market has been consistently rising.
"It is well known that Japan possesses strong technological capabilities, and these advanced technologies closely align with Kazakhstan’s current development needs. Overall, Japanese enterprises and representatives from various sectors now show keen interest in collaborating with Kazakhstan. The Kazakhstan-Japan Economic Cooperation Committee is actively advancing related initiatives and has already established a 2026 activity plan. This year, the committee will hold its next session, bringing together leading companies from both countries once again to jointly explore cooperation directions," he said.
At the exhibition, Japanese firms including Aeronext Inc., SAKIGAKE JAPAN Corporation, ZEPHYR CORPORATION, SORAMITSU CBDC, and Revo International Inc. highlighted their latest solutions in areas such as drone technology, solar and wind energy utilization, carbon credit systems, and bioenergy.
Participants also engaged in in-depth discussions regarding the prospects of introducing these advanced technologies into the Kazakh market and exchanged views on further expanding cooperation space between the two countries in trade, investment, and economic fields.
Governor Yuriko Koike delivered a speech at the event—marking her third visit to Astana.
"Each time I come here, I am amazed by the city’s rapid development and the ever-increasing number of young entrepreneurs. Among those present are many representatives from cutting-edge fields such as artificial intelligence, renewable energy, and digital transformation. On our side, we have also brought along numerous venture capital firms active in these industries. I believe that through collaboration between our two sides, we can jointly address complex global challenges and achieve shared prosperity," said Governor Koike.
She also revealed that agreements have already been signed between Astana and Tokyo, focusing on areas including digital development, emergency management, and high-tech research and development.
In addition, Governor Koike invited Kazakh enterprises to participate in the annual “SusHI Tech” international conference held in Tokyo.
"Tokyo hosts the 'SusHI Tech' summit every year, gathering over 700 startups from around the world, particularly from Asia. It is currently the largest international event of its kind in Asia. We sincerely hope Kazakh companies will actively engage. Let us jointly leverage our high-tech potential to transform Astana into a truly sustainable, modern city," she said.
According to prior reports, on the 22nd, President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev of Kazakhstan met with Yuriko Koike and conferred upon her the First-Class Order of Friendship.
