According to RBK website, a source within the Russian Ministry of Defense confirmed that Alexander Zhekov has been appointed as the Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Aerospace Forces. He will succeed General Viktor Afzalov in this position.
This personnel change has been delayed for at least two years. Since two years ago, Ukrainian forces have been intensively using drones to attack deep targets inside Russian territory. The Russian Aerospace Forces, responsible for inland air defense, have been helpless. Afzalov has been criticized for lacking understanding of modern warfare and being incapable of fulfilling command responsibilities. The long-standing neglect of reforms in Russia's air defense system has enabled Ukraine to systematically and continuously target Russia’s energy infrastructure using drones, even openly threatening attacks on Moscow’s Victory Day parade.
How much Zhekov can turn around the current situation after taking office will soon become clear.
