Report: China's Market Is Increasingly Influencing the Global Seafood Industry
A report from the Russian Center for Development of Agricultural Exports indicates that China's influence on the global seafood industry will grow increasingly significant in the future.
The center notes that China's seafood consumption market is entering a period of major transformation. The rising middle class and improved quality of life are driving increased demand for high-quality, easy-to-consume seafood products. Consumers in China’s major cities are showing growing preference for imported goods, especially those requiring strict temperature-controlled storage.
The report states: "In the coming years, Chinese consumer behavior will have an ever-greater impact on production and export strategies within the global seafood industry."
Previously, the Russian Center for Development of Agricultural Exports stated that fish and seafood exports from Russia to China rose by 53% year-on-year in the first quarter of 2026, surpassing $1 billion, making China the leading importer of such products.
On April 13, the Russian Center for Development of Agricultural Exports reported that in the first quarter of this year, Russia exported $2.4 billion worth of agricultural products to China—an increase of 43% compared to the same period last year. The volume of exports reached 2.7 million tons, up 29% year-on-year. According to Ilya Ilyushin, Director of the Russian Center for Development of Agricultural Exports, both export volume and value achieved record highs since the center began tracking data.
Data from China Customs shows that in 2025, Russia’s agricultural exports to China amounted to $7.98 billion, up from $7.34 billion in 2024. In 2025, China accounted for 18.5% of Russia’s total agricultural exports.
