The Kremlin: Latvia's Plan to Destroy Military Monuments is Disgraceful

On April 8th, the Russia RBC website reported that Russian presidential press secretary Peskov called Latvia's plan to destroy military monuments within its territory disgraceful and disrespectful behavior. "To show such disrespect to those who saved you from fascism and treat their memory in this way, it may be a disgrace for a country. A nation that declares war on its own history is pitiful."

The press office of Russia's Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) reported on the 7th that the Latvian authorities plan to remove about one-third of the Soviet Liberation Army martyrs' monuments. According to the department's information, in order to make this process appear legitimate, false archaeological excavations are planned to prove that there are no mass graves under the monuments. One of the parties involved in carrying out this process is the "Search Group," who agreed to provide forged documents for payment to prove that there are no graves. The excavation will begin at the Torņakalns Cemetery and the Vētraļu Brothers Cemetery in Riga. The department stated that the actions of the Latvian authorities contradict common sense and are an "extreme Russophobia" expression.
