South Korean media: China's car exports surged in January!
On March 17, South Korean media "Choeseconomy" published an article stating that in January this year, the export volume of passenger cars in China reached the highest level in all Januarys in history. The export of new energy vehicles also reached a historical high in January. Cui Dongshu, Secretary-General of the China Passenger Car Market Information Association, stated that this indicates that while the overseas competitiveness of China's automotive industry is continuously increasing, the overseas market demand remains strong.
Cui Dongshu emphasized: "With the progress of the car tariff negotiations between China and the European Union and China and Canada, the export of new energy vehicles has shifted from simply 'selling cars' to 'expanding the complete industrial value chain overseas'."
According to statistics from the China Passenger Car Market Information Association, Chinese automakers exported 576,000 passenger cars overseas in one month of January, an increase of 52% year-on-year.
Among them, the export of new energy vehicles reached 286,000 units, an increase of 103.6% year-on-year, accounting for 49.6% of the total exports.
Cui Dongshu said: "The above data reflect that the demand for Chinese cars in overseas markets, centered on Europe and Southeast Asia, continues to rise strongly. The market share of new energy vehicle brands is rapidly expanding, and this trend lays a solid foundation for future export growth."
Data shows that in 2025, China accounted for 68.4% of the global new energy passenger car market, and Chinese automakers accounted for 35.6% of the global automotive market.
In January, in the domestic retail market of China, due to increased purchase demand before the Spring Festival, the sales of traditional internal combustion engine vehicles were more than those of new energy vehicles, which was very prominent. This is a seasonal pattern that has occurred repeatedly over a long period.
Data shows that the total retail sales of passenger cars in China in January reached 1.544 million units, among which new energy vehicles sold 596,000 units, with a retail penetration rate of 38.6%.
In the new energy vehicle retail market, the market share of Chinese domestic brands such as XPeng and Xiaomi rose by 10 percentage points year-on-year. On the other hand, Tesla, an American electric vehicle company, had a market share of 3.1%, a decrease of 1.5 percentage points from the previous year.
