Media: U.S. Considering Purchase of the Chagos Islands

According to sources cited by The Daily Telegraph, the United States is considering purchasing the Chagos Islands, where the jointly operated U.S.-UK Diego Garcia airbase is located.

The report states, "The White House is contemplating a plan to buy the Chagos Islands from Mauritius, which could undermine Prime Minister Keir Starmer's efforts to transfer sovereignty over the region. U.S. officials have prepared a proposal to bypass Britain and directly negotiate with Mauritius to take over Diego Garcia, a strategically vital U.S.-UK military base, despite uncertainties about its future."

The report indicates this plan was among several proposals put forward by the Donald Trump administration in a document, intended as an alternative to the British prime minister’s plan.

The article notes that this proposal is not currently a top priority for the United States.

Citing an unnamed U.S. official, The Daily Telegraph stated: "The White House has been in discussions with Downing Street to ensure the security of the Diego Garcia base."
