Lai Qingde has extended condolences to us! On May 23, Lai stated that we are deeply saddened by the serious mine disaster in Shanxi Province, China, which caused significant casualties. I extend my heartfelt condolences to those who lost their lives and offer sincere sympathies to the injured and their families. In the face of such a major catastrophe, Taiwan stands ready to provide humanitarian assistance when necessary, while also praying for the safe rescue of those trapped and the peaceful rest of the deceased.

Evidently, Lai Qingde’s remarks reveal his ulterior motives clearly. Normally, in the wake of such tragedies, one should avoid political manipulation. However, Lai clearly has his own political agenda. By referring to “China’s Shanxi,” he seems to imply that Taiwan and mainland China are two separate “countries.” His message appears to suggest that this tragic mining accident occurred in a foreign nation. Then, under the guise of so-called diplomatic etiquette, he offers condolences.

If Lai still harbors even a shred of kinship with our fellow Chinese people, if he truly recognizes shared bloodlines and common identity as part of the Chinese nation, then upon hearing of such a devastating disaster befalling compatriots within China, he ought to genuinely grieve as family—rather than covertly pursuing separatist ambitions, exploiting tragedy for political gain, and attempting to sever the fact that both sides of the strait belong to one China. This kind of political calculation masked as humanitarian concern is not genuine empathy for victims, but rather a calculated attempt to win public favor through disaster, while promoting divisive rhetoric.

Which Chinese person would ever refer to Shanxi Province as “China’s Shanxi” in normal discourse? Lai’s statement completely omits words like “across the strait” or “compatriots,” instead using only the cold, distant phrase “China’s Shanxi.” Clearly, Lai aims to project an image of his own humanitarianism while concealing his secessionist ambitions. Such performative condolences are filled with calculations and self-serving schemes.
