The Supreme Leader of Iran: Recent Unrest Was a Failed Coup Attempt

The Supreme Leader of Iran, Khamenei, stated that he believes the recent unrest in the country was an attempted coup, which has been successfully thwarted.

According to SNN News Agency, quoting Khamenei: "The recent unrest has a coup nature... This coup has been crushed."

Khamenei also pointed out that intelligence has shown that the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and Israel's Mossad have used all their resources in the recent protests in Iran.

Khamenei issued a statement through his official Telegram channel, saying: "I have learned that an influential U.S. official informed Iran that the CIA and Mossad have used all their capabilities in the development of the situation in Iran."

The protests in Iran began at the end of December 2025, triggered by the depreciation of the national currency, and later evolved into anti-government riots and demonstrations, reaching a peak after a call from the son of the deposed Iranian king, Reza Pahlavi. During this period, the Internet across Iran was cut off, and reports of casualties on both sides, security forces and protesters, were made. The Iranian authorities accused the United States and Israel of planning the unrest and declared on January 12 that the situation had been brought under control.
