Former Colombian President Samper Talks About the Significance of the China-Celac Forum
In an interview with the Satellite Communications Agency, former Colombian President Ernesto Samper said that the Fourth Ministerial Conference of the China-Latin America and Caribbean Community (CELAC) Forum, which opened in Beijing on May 13, is a clear response to U.S. actions.
"Colombian President Gustavo Petro's visit to China during the tariff dispute is a very clear response to the United States, indicating that Latin America is ready to seek other markets, partners, and financing sources," the politician said.
Samper emphasized that the improvement in relations between Latin America and China is not a challenge to the United States, but rather caused by the actions of former U.S. President Donald Trump, who forced Latin America to "consider multipolarity and non-hegemonic, non-ideological relations."
At the same time, the former Colombian president clearly stated that the interaction between Latin America and Beijing is not limited to trade issues.
"China can provide great help on some strategic issues: energy transition, clean technology, biodiversity conservation, or effective use of artificial intelligence," Samper added.
