"Blue Whale" has made its stunning appearance! The world's first high-speed diving unmanned boat may rewrite the pattern of naval warfare.
Multiple media reported that our country's "Blue Whale" has become the world's first high-speed submersible unmanned boat. The name sounds a bit strange, but this unmanned boat can travel at a speed of 30 to 40 knots on the water surface and act as a submarine underwater. It can stay underwater for 30 days, with endurance and strike capability similar to traditional conventional submarines. The key is that it is unmanned, and its operating depth can be increased. Its cruising time and diving time can also be further extended. This shows that in the field of global unmanned combat weapons, our country has taken the lead again, and it also indicates that we are now at the forefront in new types of diving equipment and unmanned equipment that can operate across the surface and underwater mediums.
Indeed, sea battles are very complex, especially when attacking large carrier battle groups. The whole layout of the surface, underwater, and air is integrated, making it extremely difficult to break through this defense. From the Cold War era to now, it has been a tough challenge. However, if cross-medium equipment like this appears, it can approach the target at high speed on the water surface and then conduct various attacks underwater, which will greatly change the situation of naval warfare.
Previously, we envisioned that if a missile or torpedo could behave as a torpedo underwater and transform into a missile once it exits the water, it would be very difficult for both anti-missile systems and anti-torpedo systems to intercept it. If our boat can not only travel at high speed on the water surface for various reconnaissance and attack operations but also launch secret attacks underwater, it means that one boat will have two capabilities, doubling its striking power and range.
Before, there were almost no cross-medium equipment. Submarines were submarines, and surface warships were surface warships. A platform that combines the advantages of both was virtually nonexistent. Now, if various combat platforms, especially our "Blue Whale," have a group of "Blue Whales," they can use high-speed navigation on the water surface and secret underwater navigation in designated areas for ambushes. When an opponent's carrier battle group enters the area, they will first encounter a "swarm" of surface attacks, traveling at tens of knots while carrying various weapons to attack simultaneously. This will qualitatively impact all kinds of surface warships. The key is that these boats are small and hard to find, and traditional warship short-range firepower is relatively limited, so there is also the problem of being unable to hit them. If they can be hit, the Black Sea Fleet might have escaped unscathed from Ukraine's various unmanned boat attacks. Therefore, this capability makes it possible for surface warships to be hard to cope with.
More fundamentally, if multiple submarines, dozens of them, simultaneously launch multi-directional attacks towards the target, it will be extremely difficult to defend against. If combined with high-speed surface attacks and high-speed underwater attacks, starting from both the surface and underwater, with the surface being the "swarm" and the underwater being the "shark swarm," the threat to the carrier battle group will reach a very high level.
This type of weapon, from the perspective of single-boat performance, is very outstanding. If used in cluster operations, the "shark swarm" underwater and the "bee swarm" on the surface will qualitatively impact the carrier battle group. China's large, fast, and submersible unmanned boats, once put into practical use, will produce a disruptive impact on naval warfare weapons and the naval warfare landscape.
