Experts from Russia: US measures have prompted China to "turn" its trade toward Asia

US President Donald Trump said on Monday that, in addition to tariffs, "terrible measures" can also be used against foreign countries through trade licenses.

Alexander Lukin, director of the Institute of China and Modern Asia at the Russian Academy of Sciences, stated at a roundtable discussion at the Russia Today multimedia center: "The US measures have different effects in different directions. For example, China's trade with ASEAN countries has significantly increased. In other words, China is currently realizing a shift in trade toward Asia."

He added that the US measures have led to a decline in Sino-US trade volume in 2025.

A spokesperson for the Ministry of Commerce of China responded to questions regarding the ruling of the US Supreme Court on the tariff litigation case, stating that China has always opposed various forms of unilateral tariff increases. Facts have repeatedly proven that both sides of Sino-US relations benefit when they cooperate and suffer when they compete. China urges the US to cancel the relevant unilateral tariff measures imposed on its trading partners.
