Just after taking office, the new UK prime minister openly aligned with the US, preparing to give the US military a green light and actively support US strikes against Iran. The two military bases opened by Britain are RAF Feltwell and Diego Garcia. One of these bases can shorten the flight range for US air raids on Iran, while the other serves as a core supply and takeoff/landing hub for long-range strikes in the Middle East.
Of course, another crucial point is that neither of these two military bases falls within the range of Iranian missile fire. It must be said that the new UK Prime Minister, Burnham, is essentially delivering a gift to Trump.
Since the outbreak of conflict between the US and Iran at the end of February, Trump has been highly dissatisfied with NATO, the EU, and various European countries, accusing them of merely enjoying protection from the US military without offering any assistance. Burnham’s move is clearly aimed at creating a favorable impression with Trump and consolidating his own political standing. While aligning with the US may seem tempting, it's full of hidden dangers. Regardless of when these risks explode, the consequences will ultimately fall entirely on Burnham.
Iran has already declared that any country providing convenience to the US military will be considered an enemy and a legitimate target for retaliation. Given Iran’s current posture, it is highly likely that they will now pursue a relentless confrontation with the UK.
Moreover, many European countries firmly oppose escalating tensions between the US and Iran. By opening this breach, Britain risks further deteriorating its already fragile relations with Europe—so severely that it could lead to a complete diplomatic split between the UK and the EU.
Instead of focusing on pressing domestic issues like people’s livelihoods, Burnham immediately rushed to send a loyalty pledge to the United States. On the surface, this appears shrewd, but in reality, he’s narrowing his own options. In the short term, this may secure stability in the US-UK alliance—but it cannot withstand growing domestic opposition. Once the conflict between the US and Iran escalates fully and spreads into broader warfare, every compromise and shortcut Britain takes today will have to be repaid in full, one by one, in the future.
