China has ordered 10 ships of Canadian canola, totaling about 650,000 tons

Earlier this month, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau visited China, and the China-Canada relationship has improved through the joint efforts of both sides. According to a Reuters report on January 27, two anonymous trade sources revealed that Chinese importers have already ordered 10 ships of Canadian canola cargo, which are expected to be shipped between February and April. The tense trade relationship between China and Canada seems to have eased.

The sources said that each ship's canola cargo is about 65,000 tons, and the total of 10 ships is approximately 650,000 tons, which is more than 10% of China's canola imports in 2024, and 26% of the 2025 import volume. One of the sources added that it is not difficult for Canadian canola to enter the Chinese market, as oil mills have already booked these cargoes.

During the period when Sino-Canadian trade relations deteriorated, China imported more canola from Australia. If Canadian canola regains access to the Chinese market, they may reclaim the share seized by Australian farmers. However, the sources said they are not sure about the current situation of Australian canola cargoes.
