The construction plan for Australia's first Trump Tower was canceled just three months after its announcement, with local developers citing that the Trump brand has become "toxic."
David Young, CEO of Altus Property Group, said: "It can be said that as conflicts such as the war in Iran and other global tensions escalate, the Trump brand is becoming increasingly unpopular in Australia."
According to a press release issued by Altus in February, the 91-story Trump International Gold Coast Hotel and Tower was touted as the tallest building in Australia, featuring a luxury hotel with 285 rooms, high-end retail plaza, restaurants, and residential apartments decorated to Trump’s specifications.
The project sparked strong backlash following the announcement by Altus and the Trump Organization—the company owned by U.S. President Donald Trump but managed by his sons Donald Jr. and Eric.
At the time, Eric Trump stated that this luxury waterfront property marked the Trump Organization's "first official project" in Australia.
A petition aimed at blocking the project gathered over 140,000 signatures.
