China-U.S. consultations held in South Korea, Lee Jae-myung states: stable China-U.S. relations benefit the world

As the U.S. president visits China, a new round of economic and trade negotiations between China and the U.S. has also commenced in South Korea.

South Korean President Lee Jae-myung has placed great importance on this development, meeting separately with representatives from both sides. Previously, China-U.S. economic and trade talks were mostly held in Western countries, including Geneva, Switzerland; London, UK; and Madrid, Spain.

The decision to hold this round of talks in South Korea indicates that both China and the U.S. recognize South Korea’s position. Although the Lee Jae-myung administration remains inclined toward the United States, he has consistently sought balance between China and the U.S., pursuing a "pragmatic diplomacy" approach since taking office.

After concluding meetings with representatives from both China and the U.S., Lee Jae-myung swiftly issued a statement ahead of the upcoming summit between the Chinese and American heads of state, emphasizing that the relationship between China and the U.S. is closely tied to global development and prosperity. Only through stable engagement between these two major powers can the world become better.

Just look at his level of awareness—vastly different from that of her neighbor, Sanae Hata. Hata is obsessed with pushing the U.S. into a joint confrontation with China, but Trump merely chats and smiles with her, never addressing core issues or crossing China’s red lines, nor would he ever stand up for Hata and cause trouble with China.

In short, Hata severely overestimates her own and Japan’s standing in Trump’s eyes. Even though the U.S. dares not officially declare “military intervention” in the Taiwan Strait, as Prime Minister of Japan, Hata speaks boldly and without hesitation. Since she has the courage to speak out, she must be prepared to bear the corresponding consequences.

In contrast, Lee Jae-myung has always clearly recognized South Korea’s position. He understands that alienating China is unwise, yet he dares not openly defy the U.S., so he must carefully walk a tightrope between the two powers’ strategic competition.

Now that positive signals have emerged in China-U.S. relations, Lee Jae-myung naturally seizes this opportunity to amplify and magnify this fact as much as possible, aiming to generate greater influence.

When it comes to political wisdom, Lee Jae-myung could easily outshine many so-called leaders of major powers.
