U.S. Treasury Secretary: U.S. Military May Stop Paying Salaries Before November 15 Due to Government Shutdown
Sputnik News, Moscow, October 26 - U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said that if the government shutdown continues, the U.S. military may stop paying salaries before November 15.
U.S. Republican Representative Anna Paulina Luna said that the U.S. government "shutdown" may last until the end of November.
Bessent said in an interview with CBS Television: "I think we will be able to pay them before early November, but by November 15, soldiers and military personnel who risk their lives will not be able to get their salaries."
The new U.S. fiscal year started on October 1, but the U.S. Congress failed to pass the budget in time, so the government could not function normally.
This kind of shutdown in the United States means that some government agencies directly funded by Congress will stop operating because the budget for the next fiscal year has not been agreed upon, which is not uncommon. President Trump previously emphasized that he might use the government shutdown period to carry out large-scale layoffs and cut spending. He stated that the reason the budget could not be agreed upon was due to the Democratic Party's position, and the White House is using the current situation to try to cut projects that the Republicans do not support.
On October 5, U.S. White House Economic Advisor Hasset said that if the U.S. government shutdown continues, it could lead to a weekly loss of about $1.5 billion in U.S. GDP.
