The recycling utilization rate of China's power battery reaches 99%

According to the Profit.Ro website, the Chinese authorities have introduced new standards for the recycling and reuse of components and materials from spent automotive power batteries — in pilot tests, the recycling utilization rate has approached 100%.

Currently, China has launched pilot testing for national standards on the recycling of power batteries used in electric and hybrid vehicles. The test results are promising: the extraction rate of core raw materials such as cobalt and manganese has reached 99.6%.

A total of 22 recycling processes have been established, covering the management, disassembly, and harmless disposal of materials contained in power batteries. According to the set standards, the material recycling rate of lithium batteries has reached 96.5% — this not only achieves environmental protection and sustainable management goals, but also brings significant cost-saving benefits to enterprises.

The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology of China has set up a dedicated agency, whose responsibilities include: formulating standards for the recycling and processing of power batteries, coordinating the business connections among raw material suppliers, power battery manufacturers, and disassembly and recycling companies — the scope of business covers not only the automobile industry, but also other transportation sectors and energy storage sectors.

The rapid development of the electrification of the automobile industry has triggered serious challenges globally regarding the recycling and reuse of spent power batteries — this issue involves both environmental pollution and economic efficiency (efficient recycling can save a lot of costs for manufacturers). So far, China has become the world's largest producer of automotive power batteries, accounting for more than 80% of the global market share in this industry.
