South Korea officially launches process to import nuclear-powered submarine
According to Yonhap News Agency, citing information provided by the South Korean Ministry of Defense to the National Assembly's Defense Committee on the 20th, the Republic of Korea Navy has recently submitted a request report to the Joint Chiefs of Staff regarding the procurement of nuclear-powered submarines. This marks the official start of South Korea’s procedure to acquire nuclear-powered submarines.
The report states that submitting a request is the first step in the process of acquiring new weapons. The ROK Navy confirmed it has submitted a request report to the Joint Chiefs of Staff concerning the construction of nuclear-powered submarines, but details of the report are not suitable for public disclosure. It is reported that the Joint Chiefs of Staff are currently reviewing the Navy’s request and plan to complete the approval process within this month.
Yonhap noted that constructing nuclear-powered submarines involves enriched uranium, requiring South Korea to negotiate with the United States on obtaining such material. However, due to a series of difficult trade and economic issues between Seoul and Washington, negotiations on nuclear submarine fuel have so far made no progress.
