Trump's Latest Statement on China Tariffs.
On May 4th local time, Trump stated in an interview that he was willing to reduce tariffs on China "at some point". His reason was: "Otherwise, you will never be able to do business with them, and they really want to do business with us." He also mentioned on another occasion that his primary goal in dealing with China was to "reach a fair trade agreement".
On one hand, he kept accusing China and exerting pressure on it continuously. On the other hand, he was eager to reach an agreement with China, even claiming that China wanted to do business with the United States, implying that China could not do without the U.S. Although this seems like a contradictory behavior, it is actually his usual strategy. Previously, he often used this method to gain benefits, repeatedly employing a combination of extreme pressure tactics and bluffing.
However, this time, he hit a snag and encountered strong countermeasures from China. More than a month ago, when Trump wielded the tariff stick targeting over 180 countries and regions globally, there were already comments pointing out precisely that China was the key to the success or failure of his tariff policy. The facts have also proved that China took the lead in effectively countering, causing severe damage to the U.S. economy. This series of consequences forced Trump to frequently adjust his strategies and keep making statements seeking dialogue and negotiation.
The Chinese side has made its position clear: talks are welcome, and confrontation is met with determination. Moreover, talks must be based on respect, equality, and mutual benefit. Dialogue without sincerity holds no meaning for China.
