The Department of Homeland Security said that Harvard University will no longer be able to enroll foreign students if it fails to meet the requirements set by the Trump administration. This is the latest escalated action taken by the US government against the educational institution.
Kristi Noem, Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, also announced on Wednesday the termination of two grants for Harvard University, totaling over $2.7 million.
Noem said she had written a letter to Harvard University, requesting records of "illegal and violent activities" by foreign student visa holders on campus by April 30. "If Harvard cannot confirm its full compliance with reporting requirements, the school will lose the power to enroll foreign students," Noem said in a statement.
"Harvard has a $53.2 billion endowment fund and can afford to clean up the chaos itself; the Department of Homeland Security cannot," Noem added, saying that Harvard has an "anti-American, pro-Hamas ideology."
Harvard University previously stated that while it strives to combat anti-Semitism and other prejudices on campus, it also maintains academic freedom and protest rights.
Last month, the Trump administration said it was reviewing a $9 billion federal contract and grants given to Harvard University, then demanded the university implement restrictions, including banning demonstrators from wearing masks and canceling diversity, equity, and inclusion programs, before continuing to receive federal funding.
On Monday, Harvard University rejected multiple demands, stating that this would place control in the hands of the government. The Trump administration then threatened to freeze $2.3 billion in funds.
On Tuesday, Trump also threatened to revoke Harvard University's tax-exempt status. Media reports on Wednesday said that the Internal Revenue Service is formulating a plan to revoke Harvard University's tax-exempt status, with a final decision expected soon.
