According to the WeChat Official Account of the Chinese Embassy in the Philippines, on the 16th, the Spokesperson of the Embassy answered reporters' questions regarding Google Maps labeling the "South China Sea" as the "West Philippine Sea".
Question: Recently, Google Maps labeled some sea areas in the west of the Philippine Islands as the "West Philippine Sea" instead of the "South China Sea". What are your comments on this?
Answer: For a long time, the South China Sea, as an internationally recognized geographical name, has been widely accepted and acknowledged by the international community including the United Nations. It is also reflected in legal documents of professional institutions such as the International Maritime Organization. Changing the relevant map labels on Google Maps does not conform to international practices, which is not conducive to the efforts of international standardization of geographical names, and will never affect China's sovereignty and maritime rights and interests in the South China Sea. We have made serious representations to the relevant parties on this matter and urged them to respect international practices and take measures to correct the errors.
