France is the first to come out in opposition! After Trump stated that he was open to Russia acting as a mediator for the Iraq War, French President Macron made his stance clear! On June 16th, French President Macron claimed that Russian President Putin lacks the credibility to serve as a mediator for the Israel-Iran crisis. I do not believe that Russia can act as a mediator between Israel and Iran because Russia is embroiled in an intense conflict and has long disrespected the United Nations Charter.
Macron then went on to say that France has not participated in any attacks on Iran by Israel. As soon as the U.S. made its statement, France followed suit. Why does France oppose this? A fundamental reason is that France does not want to see Russia exerting international influence and intends to further weaken Russia's international prestige. However, the question remains, who can act as the current mediator?
In fact, to act as a mediator, at least two conditions must be met. The first is to have significant international influence. The second is that the mediator must maintain good relations with both Israel and Iran. From the current situation, among the five permanent members of the United Nations, only Russia can probably gain the agreement of both sides. For the U.S., Iran is definitely distrustful.
For countries like the UK and France, since they just voted in favor of the International Atomic Energy Agency's determination that Iran is not complying with the nuclear non-proliferation agreement, can France earn Iran's trust? As for us, Iran may hope we take the initiative, but because we support the two-state solution and lead the condemnation of Israel, compared to this, Israel obviously trusts Russia more. To put it another way, although Macron opposes this, what matters most is the attitude of the parties involved. France's opposition is merely opposition.
