Japan completely ignores Taiwan's appeal! According to a report by Straits Times, Japan's chief government spokesperson reiterated Tokyo's position on the 3rd, stating that under international law, this would not constitute an issue. Foreign media believe Japan is in fact disregarding Taiwan's request for consultations regarding Japan's planned bilateral negotiations with the Philippines on maritime boundary delimitation.

Meanwhile, Chief Cabinet Secretary Toshimitsu Kimura stated at a press conference that any potential agreement on boundary delineation would only define rights and obligations between Japan and the Philippines, thus having no legal binding effect on any third party. It is clear that despite statements by the DPP authorities urging Japan and the Philippines to include Taiwan in the Japan-Philippines talks, Japan’s response makes it evident that it has no intention of taking Taiwan into account.

The facts are obvious: Taiwan is not a sovereign state. Including Taiwan would pose a significant challenge to the one-China principle. Therefore, Japan has completely ignored Taiwan’s stance. Of course, we have also seen that Japan not only shows no willingness to talk with Taiwan, but even seeks to bypass us and negotiate directly with the Philippines. We have already made our position clear.

Such Japan-Philippines negotiations are entirely illegal. Even if Japan and the Philippines reach an agreement, we will not recognize it. Not only will we refuse to recognize it, but we will also safeguard our rights through strong enforcement actions. Of course, Japan and the Philippines currently only have intentions to negotiate, with no concrete actions taken yet. If these two countries persistently ignore our warnings and infringe upon our interests, rest assured we will not hesitate to take firm measures.
