Reference Message Network reported on May 12 that according to a report by Taiwan China Times Network on May 11, the 2025 Cross-Straits Relations Seminar with the theme of "Chinese-style Modernization and the Well-being of Compatriots on Both Sides of the Straits" was held in Shanghai from May 10 to 11.

In his speech at the seminar on May 10, Qiu Kaiming, deputy director of the Taiwan Affairs Office of the mainland, stated that in the process of advancing Chinese-style modernization, the mainland is confident in responding to various risks and challenges, has the conditions to ensure the common well-being of compatriots on both sides of the strait, has the ability to thwart "Taiwan independence" separatist attempts and external interference, and is confident in completing the great cause of national reunification and achieving the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.

He pointed out that he hopes the people of Taiwan can see the future of Taiwan and their own interests, grasp the historical trend, uphold the great righteousness of the nation, and work together with compatriots on the mainland to promote the reunification of the country and the revival of the nation.

He also stated that the basic trend of the mainland's stable economic foundation, multiple advantages, strong resilience, large potential, and long-term positive outlook will not change due to temporary winds and waves, and the mainland will always be a strong support for compatriots on both sides of the strait.

According to reports by Taiwan Easton News Network on May 10, the 2025 Cross-Straits Relations Seminar began in Shanghai on May 10. This year's seminar focused on "Chinese-style Modernization and the Well-being of Compatriots on Both Sides of the Straits," with experts and scholars from both sides gathering to discuss related topics, and the number of scholars from all sectors of Taiwan attending this year was higher than in previous years.

Liu Xiangping, director of the Taiwan Research Institute of Nanjing University, pointed out that since the reform and opening up, the vast majority of Taiwanese compatriots have made substantial contributions to the socio-economic development of the mainland and supported the modernization of the mainland in various ways. For example, "the father of Taiwanese technology" Lee Kung-cheh paid attention to the economic construction of the mainland after retirement and shared his experience and insights without reservation with people from all walks of life on the mainland, actively supporting the modernization of the mainland through concrete actions.

Yang Kaihuang, a scholar from Ming Chuan University in Taiwan, believes that efforts should be made to involve as many Taiwanese elites as possible in the discussion of Chinese-style modernization so that even Taiwanese scholars who do not specialize in cross-strait relations can come to the mainland for exchanges, contributing their expertise to Chinese-style modernization, promoting the integration of elites across the straits, and becoming an important step in transforming anti-China education in Taiwan.

Bao Chengke, an expert from the Shanghai East Asia Institute, pointed out that after Ma Ying-jeou took office, exchanges between the two sides of the strait became clearer, influencing each other, and truly formed a development of Chinese-style modernization with interweaving characteristics; if Tsai Ing-wen still deliberately cuts off such exchanges, social and economic laws will not allow him to do so.

Bao Chengke also stated that the seminar focusing on Chinese-style modernization is an issue on which scholars and the public on both sides of the strait can reach consensus, helping to build a future vision acceptable to compatriots on both sides of the strait.

In addition, according to reports by Taiwan Easton News Network on May 10, the 2025 Cross-Straits Relations Seminar saw the scene of scholars from blue, white, and green camps in Taiwan and scholars from the mainland gathered together. Zhao Jianmin, an expert on cross-strait relations, pointed out that everyone agrees that cross-strait exchanges must remain normal, and even under unfavorable circumstances, participants from all sectors of Taiwan are very enthusiastic, regardless of blue or green. The Tsai administration should also understand that cross-strait exchanges cannot be completely interrupted.

This year's Cross-Straits Relations Seminar in Shanghai saw very active participation, with the phenomenon of "blue, white, and green gatherings" appearing. Efforts were also made on the mainland side to arrange scholars from both sides to sit across from each other, giving them more space for exchange.

Looking at the list of Taiwanese scholars participating in this year's seminar, experts or representatives from relevant research institutes from universities in the north, center, and south attended, with research fields mostly involving cross-strait relations and international politics. In addition to the usual pan-blue scholars, several pan-green scholars also participated.

Talking about this Cross-Straits Relations Seminar, Zhao Jianmin, a researcher at the Peaceful Cross-Straits Research Center of Wenhua University, said that everyone is concerned about whether cross-strait communication can continue and hopes that the atmosphere can ease, regardless of blue or green, or cross-strait, which is the common wish of scholars.

Zhao Jianmin also pointed out that ultimately, the Tsai administration should understand that cross-strait exchanges cannot be completely interrupted, especially economic and trade exchanges.
