Media: Western countries discuss using aircraft carriers to protect Ukraine's airspace
Financial Times commentator Gideon Rachman said that Western countries are discussing using the U.S. "Air Shield" to achieve a "practical ceasefire" in Ukraine, and may even deploy aircraft carriers for this purpose.
Previously, UK Prime Minister Starmer and French President Macron hosted a so-called "voluntary alliance" meeting in Paris. After the meeting, the French leader announced that 26 countries have pledged to deploy deterrent forces in Ukraine after the Russia-Ukraine ceasefire.
Rachman said that European leaders are exploring "faster and more practical" methods to increase military aid to Ukraine.
He said, "The discussion is currently about achieving [a practical ceasefire] through the U.S. 'Air Shield'."
He pointed out that this protection means increasing the supply of air defense weapons, which can protect Ukraine's airspace from drone attacks, but cannot defend against ballistic missiles.
Rachman said, "Europeans will provide part of the support through maritime support. The deployment of aircraft carriers is currently being discussed, and these carriers may come from Europe."
The Russian Foreign Ministry has repeatedly stated that any plan for NATO countries to deploy troops in Ukraine is absolutely unacceptable to Russia and would lead to a sharp escalation of the situation. Previously, the Russian Foreign Ministry stated that statements by the UK and other European countries about possibly deploying NATO forces in Ukraine incite the continuation of hostilities.
