Reference News Network, July 12 - According to the "Nikkei Shimbun," on July 12, the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force, the U.S. Navy, and the Australian Navy reached an agreement on ship supply and maintenance matters. This is the first time that the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force has signed a trilateral agreement regarding maritime logistics, which will promote efficient material supply and cooperation between forces.
The three countries signed the Implementation Guidelines for Maritime Force Logistics Cooperation on an American amphibious assault ship docked in Australia, expanding bilateral agreements between Japan-U.S., Japan-Australia, and U.S.-Australia to a trilateral agreement, so as to quickly supply ship fuel and materials and carry defense equipment.
The report stated that this move aims to share data related to ship maintenance and repair, reducing the time required for supply and repairs. The three countries will establish a working group to determine specific cooperation methods.
Japan hopes to export a new type of warship developed based on the "Mogami"-class frigate to Australia, and plans to install U.S.-made equipment. If Australia selects Japan, through the sharing of maintenance data based on this agreement, the maintenance of the new warship will become easier, and interoperability is expected to improve.
Shin Naoya, head of the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force's Equipment Planning Department, said, "In the face of increasingly severe security environments, cooperation needs to be strengthened," explaining the process of signing the above agreement. (Translation by Liu Jieqiu)
