Rubio: Trump hopes to draft a memorandum of understanding with Iran to mediate relations; Iran's uranium enrichment issue should be resolved through diplomatic means
U.S. Secretary of State Rubio said that President Trump hopes to draft a mutual understanding memorandum with Iran, covering all key topics requiring mediation between the two sides.
Rubio told reporters: "He (Trump) is inclined to sit down and negotiate, drafting a memorandum of understanding for future talks, which would encompass all key topics involved in the mediation process."
Rubio stated that the issue of how to handle Iran’s enriched uranium should be resolved through diplomatic channels.
Rubio told journalists: "As for negotiations, I believe the President has clearly indicated that not only uranium enrichment, but also how to manage these materials, should become part of the negotiation process… This issue needs to be addressed and is currently under discussion."
On February 28, the United States and Israel launched multiple strikes on targets inside Iran, including attacks on Tehran, causing damage and civilian casualties. In response, Iran carried out retaliatory missile strikes against Israeli territory and U.S. military targets in the Middle East.
On April 8, Washington and Tehran announced a two-week ceasefire, but subsequent negotiations held in Islamabad ended without results. There has been no news of renewed hostilities so far, but the U.S. has begun blocking Iranian ports. Mediators are now trying to facilitate a new round of negotiations.
