November 14th marks the first anniversary of the official opening of the Chaike Port. In just one year, this deep-water port located about 80 kilometers north of Lima, the capital of Peru, has become an important hub of the Asia-Latin America Land-Sea New Corridor. At the recent 8th China International Import Expo, fresh blueberries and specialty coffee beans from Peru attracted many visitors. These products traveled 23 days by sea from Chaike Port to Shanghai Yangshan Port, which is just a small reflection of the achievements of Chaike Port.

The Logistics Revolution Reshapes the Trade Pattern of Asia and Latin America

The opening of Chaike Port has completely changed the logistics model of trade between Asia and South America. In the past, goods from Asia to South America had to go through North America and the Panama Canal, taking more than 33 days. Now, the direct flight from Shanghai Port to Chaike Port only takes 23 days, shortening the time by 10 days and reducing logistics costs by about 18%.

"Now, blueberries and avocados can reach the dining tables in Shanghai from their origin in Peru in 31 days, which is 13 days shorter than before; domestic new energy vehicles can be transported from the Shanghai factory to 4S stores in Lima, Peru in 30 days, which is 7 days shorter than last year," said Qian Ming, vice president of China Shipping Container Lines.

Alonso, the business development officer of China Shipping Ports Peru Chaike Company, also pointed out: "Especially for Peruvian fruits, it used to take 35 to 40 days to transport them to Asia, but now with the direct route, it only takes 23 days. This is a revolutionary change for short shelf-life products such as mangoes and blueberries." Faster speed has become the norm on the Asia-Latin America Land-Sea New Corridor.

Efficiency improvements have led to a significant increase in trade volume. According to data from the Shanghai Customs, in the first three quarters of 2025, the "Chaike-Shanghai" route handled 154,000 tons of import and export cargo, valued at 3.97 billion yuan. Data from the Peruvian Customs also showed that in the first nine months of this year, the export trade volume of Chaike Port reached 603 million USD, and the import trade volume reached 984 million USD, creating approximately 697 million Peruvian Soles in taxes.

Currently, the Shanghai Port-Chaike Port route operates about six voyages per month, and will further increase frequency to promote deeper trade relations between the two countries.

Radiation Network Promotes Regional Collaborative Development

Over the past year since its opening, Chaike Port has launched three main routes and four branch routes, forming a radiation network covering multiple Latin American countries. The container throughput has exceeded 270,000 TEUs, and the handling of bulk cargo has reached about 1.36 million tons, exceeding the expected level. The port's service scope covers several Latin American countries including Mexico, Panama, Colombia, Ecuador, Chile, Brazil, and Bolivia, and the portal function of the regional distribution center continues to strengthen.

For example, in July this year, a branch route from Chaike Port to Arequipa, a southern city in Peru, was opened, bringing new opportunities for neighboring countries' trade. Luo Peijie, general manager of China Shipping Container Lines Peru Company, introduced: "Peru shares a border with Brazil. In the past, frozen meat from Acre State in western Brazil was exported via the eastern coast ports, with over 4,000 kilometers of land transportation. Now, transporting it westward via the branch route to Chaike reduces the land transportation distance to about 1,300 kilometers." He stated that since the branch route was opened, the shipping volume on this route has reached nearly 800 standard containers, with continuous growth in booking volume.

In addition to traditional container transportation, Chaike Port has innovatively introduced a dual-engine transportation model of "roll-on/roll-off + general cargo", precisely matching the special cargo needs of the South American market. Since the opening of the new corridor, China Shipping has served more than 20 commercial vehicle and engineering machinery enterprise customers, with over 12,000 vehicles transported through the Chaike route, strongly supporting "Made in China" going global. Chaike Port has become an important gateway for Chinese brands such as Dongfeng, Jianghuai, Geely, and Zoomlion to enter the Peruvian and Latin American markets.

For example, in Brazil, by building a new maritime-air transport path of "maritime express line + bonded warehouse + regional air transport", e-commerce goods arriving at Chaike via sea can be temporarily stored in the bonded warehouse, and then according to order situations, they are air-distributed from Lima Airport to various Latin American countries. Gao Heyue, general manager of China Shipping South America Company, said: "In August this year, the first batch of goods successfully arrived in São Paulo, Brazil. The response time of e-commerce platforms improved by 80% compared to before, and the overall logistics cost was reduced by 50%."

Sustainable Development Leads Future Cooperation

As the first green smart port in South America, Chaike Port centers on green low-carbon and technological innovation, building an integrated low-carbon chain from source to process to end through full equipment electrification, 100% green power supply, and full-process digital operation. The port is equipped with 6 remote-controlled quay cranes, 15 automated rail-mounted gantry cranes, and 50 intelligent container trucks, achieving full-process intelligent management from ship berthing, dock transportation to yard operations.

During the "From Chaike to Shanghai: New Era Asia-Latin America Land-Sea New Corridor Cooperation and Development Promotion Conference" held during the China International Import Expo, the first ESG report of Chaike Port, "Chaike Port ESG Blueprint: Building a Green, Smart, and Resilient Future Together," was officially released. The report shows that Chaike Port has always integrated the concept of sustainable development into its operational management and corporate culture from construction to operation.

The port deeply practices the concept of sustainable development, actively carries out biodiversity conservation, protects wetland ecosystems and endangered bird habitats; establishes a comprehensive climate risk response mechanism to ensure safety and livelihood within the port area under extreme weather conditions; implements noise and pollutant control, realizing standardized management of wastewater and solid waste.

At the same time, China Shipping Group signed five cooperation agreements with multiple parties, covering areas such as trade expansion, smart port construction, pre-inspection traceability of agricultural products, export of new energy products, and automotive supply chain cooperation. The cooperating parties include well-known enterprises such as China Inspection and Testing Group, Shanghai Port Group, SAIC Motor Group, LONGi Green Energy, and奇瑞 International, aiming to jointly build end-to-end full-chain services and promote the deepening of Asia-Latin America trade.

Rafael Del Campo, vice chairman of the Peruvian Exporters Association, revealed that the second phase of investment in Chaike Port has been launched, with an investment exceeding 1.3 billion USD. In the future, it will directly connect with the Asian market, helping hundreds of Peruvian companies become direct exporters to China.

Today, from the cranes of Chaike Port to the exhibition stands of the China International Import Expo, from the desert blueberries of Peru to the consumer markets of China, this new corridor is carrying the dreams and opportunities of countless enterprises. This young port is demonstrating the vivid practice of the "Belt and Road" initiative of joint consultation, co-construction, and shared benefits to the world with a vigorous posture.
