Japanese Media: Japan Sees "Giant Panda" Again

According to Japan's Fuji News Network on March 3: Now that there are no giant pandas in Japan, any topic seemingly related to pandas will spark heated discussions.

On January 27, 2026, the twin giant pandas "Xiaoxiao" and "Leilei" from Ueno Zoo returned to China, making Japan the first "panda-free" country in 54 years.

However, on March 1, someone saw a giant panda again in Japan, called the "Sunset Panda."

The "Sunset Panda" is actually a scene where the sunset overlaps with a radio tower, looking like a panda's face. This scene was observed in Akashi City, Hyogo Prefecture on March 1.

It is said that there are two opportunities for observation each year, but sometimes it cannot be observed due to the position of the sunset and weather conditions. This observation on March 1 was the first "Sunset Panda" seen after about one and a half years.

Mr. Takashi Ijima, director of the Akashi City Astronomical Science Museum: "As a researcher of 'Sunset Panda,' the image in the picture is a perfect panda. This is a regular observation event, and I hope it can continue as long as possible."

"The next opportunity for observation will come in October. It will be very interesting to see if the 'Sunset Panda' reappears then."

Yuta Nozaki estimates that Japan's actual GDP will decline by 0.58% in the first year and 0.96% in the second year. The trend of food inflation has eased, and real wages are expected to turn positive, but people are worried that "due to the worsening situation in Iran leading to a surge in energy prices, the negative range of real wages may expand again."
