Combing reports from Fox News and the New York Post, former FBI Director James Comey's post on Instagram on the 15th was accused of inciting violence against U.S. President Trump. The White House, Department of Homeland Security, and Trump's eldest son all responded to it, interpreting it as a "death threat" against Trump. Currently, the Secret Service is investigating the matter.
It was reported that the image posted by Comey on Instagram on the 15th showed several shells arranged in the shape of the number "8647" on the beach. Comey also commented under this post, "I was walking on the beach and saw this cool shell formation...". Fox News explained that "86" is usually used as a number calling for murder or removal of someone, while The New York Times said that "86" is commonly used as slang, meaning to remove something or someone - especially when referring to menu items at restaurants and bars. Trump is currently serving as the 47th president of the United States. As of now, the post has been removed.
In response, White House Deputy Chief of Staff Taylor Budowich posted on X, stating that President Trump is currently on an international visit in the Middle East, yet this former FBI director released a message that could obviously be interpreted as an "attack" on the current U.S. president - a message written in the sand. This has deeply concerned everyone, and "we are taking this matter seriously."
Department of Homeland Security Secretary Nielsen stated that the Secret Service has now intervened in this matter. She posted on X, saying that Comey had just "called for the assassination of Trump," and the Department of Homeland Security and the Secret Service are investigating this threat and will respond appropriately.
Trump's eldest son, Donald Trump Jr., also posted on X, stating that Comey casually called for the "murder of my father," along with a screenshot of Comey's post.
It was reported that Comey himself responded, saying he "didn't realize" that some people would interpret this post as inciting violence. "I posted a picture of some shells I saw today while walking on the beach." "I didn't expect some people to associate these numbers with violence. I never intended to, but I oppose any form of violence, so I deleted the post."
On May 9, 2017, during his first term, Trump dismissed then FBI Director James Comey from his position.
