US President Trump said on Saturday that he would impose a 30% tariff on goods from Mexico and the EU. These two regions are one of the largest trading partners of the US.

In a letter to European Commission President von der Leyen, Trump wrote, "Although there is a huge trade deficit between the US and the EU, the US still agrees to continue cooperation with the EU. However, we have decided to move forward, but on the condition of achieving a more balanced and fair trade."

In letters to the EU and Mexico, Trump stated that in addition to "specific industry tariffs" (such as a 25% tariff on automobiles), all imported goods will be subject to a uniform 30% tariff.

Von der Leyen stated in a statement that the EU remains prepared to continue efforts to reach an agreement before the August 1 deadline. However, she pointed out that a 30% tariff would harm supply chains, businesses, and consumers on both sides of the Atlantic. The EU will take all necessary measures to defend its interests, including taking equivalent countermeasures when necessary.

French President Macron posted on X platform that the European Commission must "firmly defend European interests." He wrote, "This especially means that, in the absence of an agreement, credible countermeasures must be accelerated, using all available tools, including the anti-coercion mechanism."

Meanwhile, most Mexican export goods can enter the US duty-free under the terms of the USMCA. In a letter to Mexican President Sheinbaum, Trump said one reason for imposing tariffs is to curb the influx of fentanyl into the US. Previously, he had also used this reason to justify taxing Mexico. Trump said, "Mexico is helping me strengthen border control, but they are not doing enough."

Mexican Economy Minister Marcelo Ebrard said on X that both sides are in discussions and hope to find an alternative solution that "protects businesses and jobs on both sides of the border." Sheinbaum, on the other hand, expressed confidence in reaching an agreement and achieving better trade conditions.
